2021/22 ‘Friendly’ Season Announced

Following the early finish of the 2019/20 season and the cancellation of the 2020/21 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the South Cambs Badminton League is delighted to announce that competitive play will return with a tweaked ‘Friendly’ format for the 2021/22 season.

Whilst we understand that some Clubs are unfortunately struggling to find suitable venues to host club nights and matches (among other covid-related issues), many others are keen and able to play competitive matches for the first time in over 18 months. Therefore the 2021/22 season will be run on a ‘Friendly’ basis. In short, this season will not affect the League structure for the 2022/23 season, which will be determined by the positions at the close of the 2019/20 season, as previously planned.

Therefore, there is no obligation for teams to enter, and if they choose not to do so they will not be disadvantaged in future seasons as a result. Teams will be able to enter part-way through the season if their situation changes, and entered teams will be under no obligation to play all of the matches in their League.

The Bill Pink Cup and Variety Cup will be played (subject to the number of entries received). These are also ‘optional’, and as per usual will run as standalone events in addition to the Leagues.

The (‘soft’) deadline for entering the League and Cup events is 17th September – please look out for the form that will be emailed to club Committees soon. As aforementioned, League entries will be permitted throughout the season; this deadline is to enable an approximate League structure to be drawn up. Due to their nature, Cup entries will not be possible once the competitions have commenced, but entries soon after the 17th September may be accepted – please contact the Acting Secretary, Tom Wade, on tjw84@cam.ac.uk .

To ensure that the South Cambs Committee holds up-to-date details about your Club’s Committee members, please fill in the form (which has been emailed to those who’s details we currently have) at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeOYZYVqx6azZxaBizQVUpKsMQfGXqy4tC2sODX5JLva_Ph5w/viewform?usp=sf_link if your Club has not already done so.

We hope that the pandemic has not affected yourself or your Club significantly, and look forward to Clubs returning to court in a safe manner. For further details on the 2021/22 season and other matters, please see the 2021 AGM minutes in the ‘Useful Docs’ section. If you have any questions, queries or comments, please don’t hesitate to contact the Acting League Secretary, Tom Wade, on tjw84@cam.ac.uk .

2019-20 Season Ends Early due to COVID-19 Crisis

All 2019-20 South Cambs Badminton League Matches to be cancelled from now onward!

In view of the announcement from the Prime Minister today, the League Committee have agreed our only course of action is to end the Cambridgeshire Badminton League season early. All remaining matches for this season should be cancelled forthwith.

Unfortunately, there is no easy solution to determine final league positions (titles, relegation, promotion) but the committee will meet to discuss the situation when the current crisis is over, and our decision will be posted on the Cambridgeshire League website and Club Secretaries will be emailed. We will endeavour to consult with our clubs as much as possible about these decisions during that time.

It is up to individual clubs whether they will proceed with club nights, though we would urge you not to take undue risks.

Sandra Dennis & Committee; Chair Cambridgeshire Badminton League.

Ely Victoria Take Bill Pink Home

Congratulations to Ely Victoria who won the 2018/19 Bill Pink final with a convincing win over Hurst. The competitive (yet friendly) final saw several games go to 3 but the Ely side came home with a 7-2 victory.

Congrats to their Standard Team: Jenny Crump, James Wilson, Neil Place Hannah Robertshaw, Sara Cunnington, and Chris Tustian (and subs: Mo Chaudury, Dan Lay, and Sandra Ashcroft)

2018 AGM Date

Hi All!
The South Cambs AGM & Fixtures Meeting will be at 7pm 16th August in a meeting room at David Lloyd in Cambridge (membership not required!). We are running both fixtures meeting and AGM on the same day this year, so please could I ask attendees to arrive promptly as we will have a lot to get through. At the meeting we will set next year’s league structure, and it’s a chance for clubs to raise any issues or suggestions for how we can improve things.
As always, our committee is desperately short of volunteers and representation. Only 4 of our 18 clubs are represented!! The workload is very small compared to club roles (2-3 meetings per year) – especially if we have enough to spread it out, so please help out if you can.
See you then.
Simon.

St Ives Claim Handicap Cup Victory

Congratulations to St Ives Badminton Club who this weekend claimed the Handicap Cup. St Ives beat Cambridge City 2nd team by 63 points after a small handicap adjustment. This was possibly the easiest handicap to assign in a final for years, given the two sides are right next to each other in the league, and split the points in their two league games!

See the final winning team here:

And commiserations to the Cambridge City side, but well done on fighting your way to the final:

Crossways 1 Secure 2nd Successive Bill Pink Cup

Our congratulations to Crossways 1 for securing their 2nd successive Bill Pink Cup win.

Crossways won the final convincingly 8-1 over Cambridge City, in a repeat of the final from the previous 2 seasons.

Congratulations to the team below (from left to right): Steph Jong, Andrew Kidger, James Barclay, Kerry Kellett, Alison Mclellan, and Chris Lim.

P.S – Not sure about that shirt, Chris!
